Two assistants hired by Fisch
Steve Belichick and Vinnie Sunseri are set to be hired as assistant coaches at the University of Washington under Jedd Fisch, according to multiple reports Monday.
Belichick, 36, is expected to become the defensive coordinator, while Sunseri is poised to become the defensive backs coach.
Belichick was the outside linebackers coach the last four seasons in New England, a role that included play-calling duties. He was reportedly offered a job by new coach Jerod Mayo, but instead will head west.
Interestingly, Fisch, who was the Patriots quarterbacks coach in 2020, also has hired Brennan Carroll, the son of Pete Carroll, as his offensive coordinator.
Sunseri, 30, coached the running backs in New England the last three seasons. Prior to that, he was a defensive coaching assistant in 2020 with the Patriots. An Alabama alum, he suited up for New Orleans, New England, and San Francisco during a three-year playing career.
Montgomery DL coach
The Patriots are hiring Jerry
Montgomery as their defensive line coach, a league source confirmed Monday.
Montgomery, 44, spent the past eight seasons with the Packers, but recently learned he would not be retained after the team hired former Boston College coach Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator.
For the last six seasons, Montgomery served as Green Bay’s defensive line coach — a role that became vacant in New England because coach Mayo promoted
DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator. For the last two seasons, Montgomery also served as Green Bay’s run game coordinator, a title that the Patriots have not officially used in recent years.
Covington played an important role in establishing New England’s stout run defense, which surrendered the lowest average yards per carry (3.3) to opposing teams last season. He also aided the development of 2021 secondround pick Christian Barmore, who registered a breakout season with 8½ sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and 64 tackles, including 13 for a loss.
Montgomery has an extensive background working as a defensive line coach, having also served in that role for eight years at the collegiate level. Before getting hired by the Packers in 2015, Montgomery had stints at Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma.
Montgomery is familiar with new Patriots offensive coordinator
Alex Van Pelt, whom he overlapped with in Green Bay for four seasons. He also overlapped with Patriots director of scouting Eliot
Wolf for three seasons.
Mayo and Covington still have multiple roles to finalize on the defensive side.
