HUNNEWELL, Horatio Hollis

Of Nahant, MA, died peacefully on February 25, 2024, at the age of 94.

The son of Hollis Hunnewell and Mary Frances Oakes Greenway. Hollis grew up on Pond Road in Wellesley, MA and attended Charles River School, as did his four children. The family summered by the ocean in Nahant and enjoyed their farmhouse in South Tamworth, NH. He graduated from

St. Paul’s School in 1947 and from Harvard College in 1951, where he sang tenor with the Krokodiloe­s. Hollis lost good friends in the Korean War. He served in the National Guard and was a member of The American Legion. He launched his insurance career at Lloyd’s of London, and owned Hollis, Perrin & Attridge Insurance Company of Boston. Known for his one-of-a-kind sense of humor, Hollis enjoyed singing in the choir, playing ice hockey and sailing with friends. He crewed the last leg of the replica Mayflower II to Plymouth, MA. He hosted the “Hunnewell Hill Climb” for the Vintage Sports Car Club of America. At home he spent much of his time in the woods pulling brush, raising honeybees and winding his many clocks.

He leaves his wife of 67 years,

MA; daughter, Elliott dB. Hunnewell & husband, Joseph deBethune of Pittsfield, MA, son, Hollis Hunnewell of Cohasset, MA, daughter, Isabelle Hunnewell Stafford of Stow, ME; and seven grandchild­ren, John & Sarah deBethune, Hollis, Fisher and Charlotte Hunnewell, Thomas and Welles Stafford. He was predecease­d by his son, Peter R. Hunnewell, 1966–1994.

The family thanks Jesmond Nursing Home for their care and attention during his last years.
