Buccaneers franchise CB Winfield
The Buccaneers placed the franchise tag on Antoine Winfield Jr., a move Tuesday that ensures the All-Pro safety a one-year, $17.1 million salary for next season.
The team will continue to seek a long-term agreement with the four-year veteran who leads all defensive backs in sacks (15), quarterback hits (21), forced fumbles (11), and fumble recoveries (eight) since entering the NFL as a second-round draft pick in 2020.
Winfield, 25, led the Buccaneers with three interceptions in 2023, when he joined T.J. Watt (2019), Justin Tuck (2010), and Terrell Suggs (2003) as the only players since 2000 to have fiveplus sacks (six), five-plus takeaways (seven), and five-plus forced fumbles (six) in the same season.
Other big-name players receiving the franchise tag:
The Jaguars used theirs on standout pass rusher Josh Allen, essentially guaranteeing he will play at least another year in Jacksonville. Jacksonville’s non-exclusive franchise tender, assuming Allen signs it, would guarantee him $24 million in 2024.
R The Bears and cornerback Jaylon Johnson: He made his first Pro Bowl in the final season of his rookie contract. Johnson would earn $19.8 million in 2024 if he doesn’t agree to a multiyear deal before the July 15 deadline.
Dolphins cut LB Baker
The Dolphins released linebacker Jerome Baker, a move that frees up about $9.8 million in salary-cap space.
Baker, whom the Dolphins drafted in the third round in 2018, was entering the final year of a three-year extension but is coming off a season in which he missed extended time because of injuries.
An MCL sprain caused Baker to miss four games late last season. He then had to have season-ending wrist surgery following Miami's regular-season finale.
Among other cuts:
R The Seahawks released safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs, and tight end Will Dissly in moves that will give the team a boost of cap space ahead of the start of the new league year. The release of Diggs and Dissly will save Seattle $18 million against the cap. They will get about $6 million in cap relief with the release of Adams but also take on nearly $20 million in dead cap money by releasing him immediately.
R Linebacker Eric Kendricks was cut by the Chargers, a move that frees up $6.5 million in cap space.
Giants do not tag Barkley
Star running back Saquon Barkley moved another step closer to free agency when the Giants elected not to put a franchise tag on the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
