There’s now a Breakfast beer. (You heard that right.)

Thirteen years after releasing a beer called “Lunch,” and then continuing the series with “Dinner,” Maine Beer Co. is ready to complete the trilogy.

The Freeport brewery announced last week that it is releasing an IPA called “Breakfast.” This double IPA highlights Strata, Strata CGX, Sabro, Sabro Cryo, and Loral hops, as well as malt from Blue Ox Malthouse and Maine Malt House, both in state. Like with all Maine Beer Co. beers, the flavor in this one is clean (thankfully, this is not an orange juice bomb). At 8.5 percent alcohol, it’s also not light, nor is it light on flavor.

We caught up with Maine Beer’s creative director, Carrie Seaver, for more details on the release, which will take place Saturday starting at 10 a.m. out of Maine Beer’s Freeport taproom.

I saw the social media post on how you all were never planning to complete the set of Lunch, Dinner, and Breakfast. Why did you decide to change your minds?

“We’ve heard the comments over the years, and yes, we largely dismissed them. Every one of our brands is the result of thoughtful ideation, commitment to quality, and nonprofit giving. We knew if we gave the name Breakfast to a beer, it had to be special in each of these respects. In coordination with this release, we are hosting a threeweek food drive to benefit the Freeport Community Services Food Bank. We encourage anyone coming to buy the beer to bring a nonperishable food item to donate.”

What has this series meant to the brewery over the years? I think of these beers as iconic, but is that too strong a lean?

“We think of these beers as iconic as well. That’s part of the reason why it took so long to introduce Breakfast. The idea was always in the back of our minds, but we took our time until we had the right recipe and opportunity to help our community — and we did it our way by making it a DIPA. These beers in particular jump-started the demand for Maine Beer Company and have allowed us to do good through great beer. To date, we’ve been able to donate over 3 million dollars to environmental nonprofits.”

How do you land on a recipe for Breakfast (no pressure, right?)

The recipe that resulted in Breakfast has been in development since 2020. Over the subsequent four years, it’s been adapted and perfected to meet our quality standards. Our research and development team was thoughtful in their approach to creating a unique double IPA that we feel complements our lineup of clean, hop-forward beers we like to drink.

I know this batch is limited. Do you envision this as a onetime release, or will fans be seeing it again at some point?

While we intend to release it only this one time, if it’s popular and people like it, we’ll certainly consider brewing it again.
