At Caffè Nero in Dedham, come for the coffee, stay for the wine

- ANN TRIEGER KURLAND

Visit the Caffè Nero at Legacy Place, and you’ll notice a stylish curved bar with a sleek metal top and some cool-looking stools. Here’s where you can grab a glass of wine. Recently, Alileo, a Sicilian natural boxed wine brand based in Gloucester, joined forces with Caffè Nero (its name means black coffee in Italian), the chain of coffee houses known for its inviting atmosphere and work-friendly spaces, complete with comfy chairs. Some have couches and a fireplace. From 4 p.m. onward, patrons can have another excuse to visit, gather with friends, or simply unwind after a day of staring at a laptop. The company calls it the “Coffee Winehouse Experience.” Choose from the citrusy and crisp Young Grillo; light and floral Zibibbo Macerato with muscat notes; a plumy and peppery Syrah; or the berry-ish rosé Rosato Bronzato ($12 a glass each). Several sparkling wines are also offered, which are bottled, as well as a short menu of flatbread pizzas. Alileo was founded by husband and wife team Antonio Bertone and Alexandra Drane, alongside Bertone’s Sicilian family who make the wine. You might snub bag-in-the-box wines, even though the packaging is eco-friendly. But these are worth trying. They’re unfiltered and made traditionally with grapes from Sicily’s West Coast. In fact, the wines clinched three medals at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards last year. “The worlds of artisanal coffee and artisanal wines are symbiotic in Italian culture as is enjoying time with family and friends,” says Bertone, Alileo’s cofounder. “We’re thrilled to be the first to partner with Caffè Nero to bring this truly Italian experience to their customers.” You can anticipate more Caffé Nero “winehouses” popping up down the road. 218 Legacy Place, Dedham.
