Educator has 20 years’ experience
eileen M. Mclaughlin, former head of Mount Alvernia High School, will serve as the next superintendent of catholic schools for the boston Archdiocese, cardinal Seán P. O’Malley announced Wednesday.
Mclaughlin, a brighton resident who currently serves as a leadership coach with the lynch leadership Academy at boston college, will take the role of superintendent on June 1, the archdiocese said in a statement.
“eileen Mclaughlin is an accomplished and widely respected catholic school educator who brings more than twenty years of experience to the position of Superintendent,” O’Malley said in a statement.
“She has dedicated her career to catholic education, faithfully living the example of the gospels in her professional and personal lives. Having served as a teacher, department chair and in school leadership, Ms. Mclaughlin brings to the catholic Schools Office a wide breadth of knowledge based in real life classroom experience.”
Mclaughlin will take on the role as numerous catholic schools in eastern Massachusetts have closed in recent years. there are roughly 32,000 students and 3,000 faculty across 93 catholic schools within the archdiocese, down from 100 schools last year, according to information shared by the archdiocese as part of its annual catholic Appeal, a fund-raising effort that accounts for nearly half of its budget.
Mclaughlin was educated in boston catholic schools, attending Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Our lady of Presentation grammar School, the archdiocese said.
“these schools have served me well throughout my life, personally, academically, professionally, and spiritually,” Mclaughlin said in a statement. “i am honored to continue to serve as a catholic educator now as Superintendent. Archdiocesan schools have a rich history of serving both the church and the community. it will be an honor to work with our school leaders and teachers to build and sustain a culture of achievement built on rigor and engagement recognizing the inherent dignity of every student.”
Mclaughlin earned her undergraduate degree from boston college’s School of education in 1998 and received a master’s degree in teaching from emmanuel college. She is enrolled in the boston college School of theology, the archdiocese said.
A former middle school teacher for Saint Ann School in Somerville, Mclaughlin worked as the head of school for Mount Alvernia High School from 2010 to 2019. in her current role with the lynch leadership Academy at boston college, Mclaughlin is responsible for organizing professional development for the more than 20 catholic school leaders working in the archdiocese, the statement said.
Mclaughlin will replace outgoing superintendent thomas W. carroll, who was appointed to the role in 2019.
