New Boston Catholic schools head hired

Educator has 20 years’ experience

eileen M. Mclaughlin, former head of Mount Alvernia High School, will serve as the next superinten­dent of catholic schools for the boston Archdioces­e, cardinal Seán P. O’Malley announced Wednesday.

Mclaughlin, a brighton resident who currently serves as a leadership coach with the lynch leadership Academy at boston college, will take the role of superinten­dent on June 1, the archdioces­e said in a statement.

“eileen Mclaughlin is an accomplish­ed and widely respected catholic school educator who brings more than twenty years of experience to the position of Superinten­dent,” O’Malley said in a statement.

“She has dedicated her career to catholic education, faithfully living the example of the gospels in her profession­al and personal lives. Having served as a teacher, department chair and in school leadership, Ms. Mclaughlin brings to the catholic Schools Office a wide breadth of knowledge based in real life classroom experience.”

Mclaughlin will take on the role as numerous catholic schools in eastern Massachuse­tts have closed in recent years. there are roughly 32,000 students and 3,000 faculty across 93 catholic schools within the archdioces­e, down from 100 schools last year, according to informatio­n shared by the archdioces­e as part of its annual catholic Appeal, a fund-raising effort that accounts for nearly half of its budget.

Mclaughlin was educated in boston catholic schools, attending Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Our lady of Presentati­on grammar School, the archdioces­e said.

“these schools have served me well throughout my life, personally, academical­ly, profession­ally, and spirituall­y,” Mclaughlin said in a statement. “i am honored to continue to serve as a catholic educator now as Superinten­dent. Archdioces­an schools have a rich history of serving both the church and the community. it will be an honor to work with our school leaders and teachers to build and sustain a culture of achievemen­t built on rigor and engagement recognizin­g the inherent dignity of every student.”

Mclaughlin earned her undergradu­ate degree from boston college’s School of education in 1998 and received a master’s degree in teaching from emmanuel college. She is enrolled in the boston college School of theology, the archdioces­e said.

A former middle school teacher for Saint Ann School in Somerville, Mclaughlin worked as the head of school for Mount Alvernia High School from 2010 to 2019. in her current role with the lynch leadership Academy at boston college, Mclaughlin is responsibl­e for organizing profession­al developmen­t for the more than 20 catholic school leaders working in the archdioces­e, the statement said.

Mclaughlin will replace outgoing superinten­dent thomas W. carroll, who was appointed to the role in 2019.
