‘Oklahoma!,’ ‘Band’s Visit,’ ‘Angels in America’ are top honorees at Norton Awards

“Oklahoma!,” “the band’s Visit,” and “Angels in America” garnered three Elliot norton Awards apiece monday night in a ceremony at the huntington theatre that honored the best plays, musicals, and performanc­es on boston-area stages over the last year.

“the band’s Visit,” a coproducti­on of the huntington and SpeakEasy Stage company, was chosen as best musical by a large theater. Also awarded nortons from the show were Jennifer Apple, for her lead performanc­e, and director paul Daigneault. reagle music theatre of Greater boston’s production of “Oklahoma!” won for rachel bertone’s choreograp­hy, musical direction by Dan rodriguez, and a featured performanc­e by Jack mullen. central Square theater and bedlam’s coproducti­on of “Angels in America” was honored as best play by a midsize theater. It also took prizes for Kari buckley’s featured performanc­e and John r. malinowski’s lighting design.

the other awards for best play went to the huntington’s “John proctor is the Villain” (large theater) and theater Uncorked’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ?” (small theater).

“King hedley II” (midsize theater), and Sehnaz Dirik for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ?” (small theater).

Scenic designer Janie E. howland, whose work has appeared on boston stages for three decades, was this year’s winner of the Elliot norton prize for Sustained Excellence.
