Kelli O’Hara to headline Pops’ July 4th celebration
tony Award-winning actress Kelli O’hara will headline the 2024 boston pops fireworks Spectacular, performing alongside the boston pops and conductor Keith lockhart at the orchestra’s annual fourth of July celebration.
this year marks the 50th anniversary of the fireworks Spectacular, which will take place at the hatch Shell on the charles river Esplanade on July 4 from 8 to 11 p.m. the show will be broadcast live on bloomberg tV and radio and SiriusXm channel 119, as well as locally on WhDh-tV channel 7 and online at bloomberg.com.
“When philanthropist David mugar introduced fireworks and cannons to the pops annual July fourth concert in 1974, he created an iconic tradition that would unite millions in music and celebration over the years and would showcase boston as the birthplace of our democracy,” said lockhart in a statement. “I am grateful to be able to carry forward that legacy in this year’s boston pops fireworks Spectacular as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary event, our orchestra’s gift to the great city of boston.”
Alongside O’hara, a tony Award winner for “the King and I” in 2015, the program will also include the Americana band the mavericks, rock and roll hall of famer Darlene love, and the Singing Sergeants from the United States Air force band.
this year’s event will conclude with tchaikovsky’s “1812” overture and a fireworks display over the charles river, beginning at 10:30 p.m. the Oval, or grass-filled area designated for spectators directly in front of the hatch Shell, opens for seating at noon on July 4. (the July 3 rehearsal will be closed to the public.)
the event is planned to take place regardless of weather. If extreme weather necessitates cancellation or postponement of the concert, the pops will post an announcement at www.bso.org/boston-pops-fireworksspectacular.
