Two sojourns return to the area
Two sojourns are returning to the area next weekend for their 10th and 19th years, respectively.
The Schuylkill River Sojourn will be launching Saturday, June 3, for its 19th running year. The event is a seven-day, 112-mile kayak and canoe tour that begins in Schuylkill Haven and ends one week later at Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row. Organized by the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, over 210 people will have paddled the river by the end of the event.
According to the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, participants in this year’s Sojourn come from about 12 different states. Seventy paddlers plan to make the full 112-mile journay and 130 participants will be joining for one or more days.
The event was introduced in order to educate participants on the river’s natural beauty. Since it began, 4,000 participants from 25 states and four countries have participated. About 100 to 120 boats are permitted on the water each day of the sojourn.
Similarly, the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy has teamed up with Keenan, Ciccitto & Associates law firm of Collegeville to host a kayaking and canoeing event down the Perkiomen Creek. The sojourn begins at the Conservancy Headquarters at the border of Schwenksville and ends at Hoy Park in Arcola.
This sojourn starts on June 3 and will be launching from Red Fox Park across from the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy at 1 West Skippack Pike. The launch is scheduled for 9 a.m. and the event will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
