Miles setting records for Lehigh

- By Bill Arsenault For Digital First Media

Payton Miles’ career is a little more than half over but the junior sprinter already holds two individual and is part of three relay teams that have set records for the Lehigh women’s swim team.

Miles, from Limerick and a graduate of The Hill School, set the school record in the 50 freestyle (22.80) last season and set the new 100 freestyle (50.04) this season. She also swam a leg on the 200 medley (1:43.14), the 200 free (1:31.41) and the 400 free (3:19.78) relays that set new standards earlier this season.

Miles isn’t a Johnnycome-lately either. She captured the 100 free (50.05), finished second in the 50 free (23.13), first in the 200 free relay (1:31.41) and second in the 400 free relay (3:19.78) at the Patriot League Championships as a sophomore. As a freshman, she was first in the 50 free (22.80), second with the 400 free relay (3:21.37) and third in the 200 free relay (1:32.71).

“Payton has become much more comfortable with our system and she is believing in it more and more,” coach Rob Herb said. “You saw it in training and now you see it in practice and in meets.”

Herb has always been comfortable with Miles as a sprinter.

“Now I think she’s starting to realize it too,” the coach said.

And, the coach is expecting even more from his swimmer down the road.

“Payton is expanding to the 200 freestyle this season and that could help our team enormously,” Herb said.

The Mountain Hawks are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Patriot meets and will head for Greensboro, N.Y. on Wednesday to compete in the U.S. Winter Nationals.
