The Heritage of Green Hills in Shillington invites the public to a free opening reception of an exhibition of art created by artists with disabilities.

The reception will be held at the community on Friday, Jan. 11, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The Heritage is located at 200 Tranquility Lane, just off Morgantown Road/Route 10. Wine and cheese will be served.

The works of art are on loan from the permanent collection of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s Art Ability international, juried exhibition of art created by artists with physical, cognitive, visual and hearing disabilities.

Art Ability is held annually at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital in Malvern. This is the exhibition’s 23rd year. It is the country’s largest international, juried exhibition and sale of works created by artists with disabilities.

Dee Gorden, a resident of The Heritage, was instrumental in founding the exhibition in 1996 when she chaired a Bryn Mawr Rehab committee charged with devising a way to support disabled artists. Gorden also has served on Bryn Mawr Rehab’s board of directors, board of trustees, Foundation board and volunteer association board. She has been wheelchair-bound due to polio for more than 60 years.

Today, Dee is 94 years old. She has been wheelchair-bound since 1954 when she contracted polio. At the time, she was pregnant with the third of her four children. For the past 60 years, Dee has remained active raising a family and volunteering her time, particularly at Bryn Mawr Rehab where she served on the hospital’s board of directors, board of trustees, Foundation board and as a volunteer in the hospital’s recreation-therapy department.
