Former Boyertown School Board member running for seat vacated by Bob Mensch

Former Boyertown Area School Board member Jill Dennin has announced her candidacy for the 24th state Senate District seat being vacated by Republican Bob Mensch, who is not seeking reelection.

According to a release from her campaign, the newly drawn district includes parts of Berks and Montgomery counties, including areas new to the district, such as Amity Township, Upper Gwynedd, and North Wales which are currently represented by Sens. Katie Muth, D-44th Dist., and Maria Collett, D12th Dist.

“Our leaders in Harrisburg are out of touch with the needs of our families here in the 24th District and are leaving our families behind — from education funding to property tax relief, infrastructure investments, and finding affordable long-term care solutions for our seniors, I’m ready to fight for our community in Harrisburg and to ensure our families get their fair share,” Dennin said in the press release.

“For the last 25 years, I have been active throughout our community and have seen first-hand the issues facing families across Pennsylvania. On the school board, I fought to ensure fair funding of our public schools so all students can remain in the classroom in a safe environment and receive the quality education they deserve. Our friends, families, and neighbors deserve someone who will rise above partisan politics and special interests to address the problems that have been ignored for far too long. I’m ready to take my experience to Harrisburg and bring solutions home for the 24th District.”

Dennin is a former substitute teacher and a community advocate. Since moving to the area in 1994, Dennin has devoted her time to various organizations, including Boyertown Elementary School PTO, Bear Fever, Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels, Boyertown Area YMCA, Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities, Kennedy House Catholic Soup Kitchen, Berks County Intermediate Unit, and the Pennsylvania School Board Association.

She was recently named to the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts Hawk Mountain Council. Dennin was a substitute teacher in the Boyertown Area School District until 2013 when she was elected to the school board. She and her husband, Ned, have been married 35 years, they have four boys who are graduates of Boyertown Area School District.

In order to secure the Democratic nomination to run in the general election, Dennin will face Emanuel Wilkerson, a former Pottstown School Board member, who recently also announced his candidacy.

On the other side of the aisle are Skippack Township Supervisor Nick Fountain, who announced his candidacy in January, and Tracy Pennycuick, who defeated Dennin in the race for the 147th District House seat in 2020.
