The Optimist Club of Boyertown recently honored its essay contest winner and runner up, Boyertown students Gianna Martin and Nicole Rehrig, respectively.

Open to students of the Boyertown, Pottstown and Pottsgrove school districts, the topic for this year’s Optimist Club of Boyertown essay contest was “How does an optimistic mindset change my tomorrow,” which is selected by Optimist International each year.

Gianna and Nicole read their winning essays at the Optimist Club’s March 14 business and board meeting, with their families in attendance. Both students were presented with medals for their achievement along with a certificate.

“Both young ladies did a wonderful job writing their essays,” said club secretary Phil Haddad. “It was great to see students in the Boyertown School District willing to try something new and for some step out of their comfort zone.”

Haddad credited their teacher, Tina Schrode-Fries, for doing a great job preparing them to write their essays.

“She is a wonderful teacher, who works tirelessly with her students and her optimistic attitude would make her a great optimist member.”

“Thank you kindly to the Optimist Club for holding these great educational events for students,” said Schrode-Fries. “I am so proud of my students for competing in the essay contest and embracing an optimistic outlook.”

Gianna’s essay finished in second place in the Atlantic Central District essay contest. She will receive an engraved plaque.

“We as a club are very happy for her and seeing her succeed not only at the club level but at the district level as well,” said Haddad. “It was great to see her do well at the district level. We as a club are looking forward to seeing both young ladies enter next year.

“We look forward to working with the students of the Boyertown School District and surrounding school districts next year.”

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that we help our youth recognize how pivotal adopting an optimistic mindset is,” said Schrode-Fries.

The Optimist Club of Boyertown serves 1,750 youth in the Boyertown community with seven major sports programs along with educational programs like the essay contest and the oratorical contest.
