Smell of smoke forces plane to make an emer­gency land­ing

The smell of smoke forced the emer­gency land­ing Mon­day of an Amer­i­can Air­lines flight from Philadel­phia at Buf­falo Ni­a­gara In­ter­na­tional Air­port in Cheek­towaga.

A spokes­woman for the Ni­a­gara Fron­tier Trans­porta­tion Au­thor­ity said the emer­gency land­ing oc­curred about 3 p.m., and was pre­cip­i­tated af­ter a num­ber of peo­ple on board the plane, Amer­i­can Air­lines Flight 9879, no­ticed a smell of smoke. Ini­tial re­ports were that there was smoke in the cock­pit, but emer­gency crews did not find any ev­i­dence of a fire, the spokes­woman said.

There were 37 peo­ple on board the plane, in­clud­ing the crew. No one was hurt. The ex­act cause of the odor is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion, ac­cord­ing to the spokes­woman.
