Heupel gets long extension from UCF
UCF head football coach Josh Heupel led the Knights to a perfect 12-0 record and an American Athletic Conference title this season, and was rewarded by the university Friday with a contract extension that runs through Jan. 15, 2024.
The university announced the deal on its website, although financial terms were not immediately released Friday.
Heupel took over the Knights in December 2017 from Scott Frost, who left UCF for the head coaching job at Nebraska after leading the team to a 13-0 record last year, including a 34-27 win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl. This year, UCF will play LSU in the Fiesta Bowl.
Elsewhere, Temple coach Geof f Collins will be named head coach at Georgia Tech, replacing the retiring Paul Johnson . ... Former Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze will take the reins at Liberty University, replacing the retiring Turner Gill, who also coached at UB and Kansas. The Flames went 6-6 last season in their transition to the FBS level. Freeze resigned from Ole Miss after the university uncovered a “pattern of misconduct.”
