Szabados’ team wins in shootout
Amanda Kessel scored the only goal in the shootout to lead Team Szabados, captained by Buffalo Beauts goalie Shannon Szabados, over Team Stecklein in the National Women’s Hockey League All-Star game Sunday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
The game, two 25-minute halves of 4-on-4 hockey, was played before a crowd of 6,120 immediately after the NHL game between the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators. Team Szabados had first-half goals by Audra Richards (Metropolitan Riveters) and Katerina Mrazova (Connecticut Whale). Team Stecklein, led by Minnesota defender Lee Stecklein, tied it on second-half goals by Lisa Chesson (Buffalo) and Emily Fluke (Connecticut).
Saturday, a sellout crowd at Ford Ice Center saw Team Szabados win the Skills Competition, 4-3, over Team Stecklein. Nicole Hensley of the Beauts won the Fastest Goalie competition. Dani Cameranesi of the Beauts won the Accuracy Shooting contest.
“It was electric out there,” said Cameranesi. “It was so cool seeing it sold out and seeing all the fans and getting a little interaction to vote on who had the best shootout moves.”
