Demolition work to begin on Niagara Scenic Parkway
The long-planned removal of the Niagara Scenic Parkway along the Niagara River Gorge in Niagara Falls is to begin in earnest Monday.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, demolition work on adjoining Whirlpool Street will cause the closure of that street between Cleveland and Chestnut streets until further notice, the state Department of Transportation announced last week.
No through traffic will be allowed, although local traffic will be permitted. Detour signs will be posted. Drivers who need to access the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge should do so via Depot Street West.
The $36.5 million project began late in 2018 with utility work along Whirlpool Street, which will be reconstructed into the main north-south artery in the neighborhood.
