De­mo­li­tion work to be­gin on Ni­a­gara Scenic Park­way

The long-planned re­moval of the Ni­a­gara Scenic Park­way along the Ni­a­gara River Gorge in Ni­a­gara Falls is to be­gin in earnest Mon­day.

As of 7 a.m. Mon­day, de­mo­li­tion work on ad­join­ing Whirlpool Street will cause the clo­sure of that street be­tween Cleve­land and Chest­nut streets un­til fur­ther no­tice, the state Depart­ment of Trans­porta­tion an­nounced last week.

No through traf­fic will be al­lowed, although lo­cal traf­fic will be per­mit­ted. De­tour signs will be posted. Driv­ers who need to ac­cess the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge should do so via De­pot Street West.

The $36.5 mil­lion project be­gan late in 2018 with util­ity work along Whirlpool Street, which will be re­con­structed into the main north-south artery in the neigh­bor­hood.
