Po­lice­man and MMA fighter aims for Leg­is­la­ture seat

North Ton­awanda Po­lice Of­fi­cer Erik A. Her­bert, who has an 8-2 record as a pro mixed mar­tial arts fighter, an­nounced last week he is run­ning for the 7th Dis­trict seat in the Ni­a­gara County Leg­is­la­ture, which rep­re­sents north­ern North Ton­awanda and much of Wheat­field.

Her­bert, 32, a Demo­crat, would face Jesse P. Gooch, a Repub­li­can ap­pointed Jan. 2 af­ter Leg­is­la­tor Kathryn L. Lance re­signed. Her­bert also sought the seat. Leg­is­la­tor Ja­son A. Zona, the county Demo­cratic chair­man, said the GOP-con­trolled search com­mit­tee ac­tu­ally rated him higher than Gooch.

Her­bert served in the Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008 and was a guard in the Marine One he­li­copter unit. Her­bert joined the North Ton­awanda Po­lice Depart­ment in 2013 and won its Life Sav­ing Award in 2017.
