Defendant’s ex-wife may be called in cold-case killing
Niagara County District Attorney
Caroline A. Wojtaszek said Friday that she will ask a judge to allow Joseph H. Belstadt’s ex-wife to testify “about the state of the marriage” at his July trial on charges of murdering a North Tonawanda teenager in 1993.
Judge Sara Sheldon asked the sides to research whether Karrie Belstadt’s testimony might create a conflict of interest for the defense. An attorney who at the time worked with co-defense counsel Michele G. Bergevin represented Karrie Belstadt in the 2007 divorce.
She is one of 700 potential witnesses in the death of Mandy Steingasser, 17.
Joseph Belstadt, 43, was charged with murder last April.
