Here are facts about opting out:
State Assessments start next week for third through eighth-graders
• ELA and math assessments each will be given over two days and will be untimed. Tests consist of multiple choice and open-ended questions. • Computer-based ELA tests start Monday and paper-based tests start Tuesday. Math tests start in May. • Test refusal rates, or opt-out rates, have gone down the past two years in the state. Last year, all 38 districts in Erie and Niagara counties experienced a decline in the number of students opting out. • The average opt-out rate in Erie and Niagara counties last year was 39 percent, compared to the total opt-out rate in the state of 18 percent. • Schools that persistently fail to meet a 95 percent participation rate cannot be recognized as Reward or Blue Ribbon schools and must produce a plan to increase participation.
