Candidates to begin filing designating petitions Thursday
Aspiring office holders will begin filing designating petitions to qualify for the ballot on Thursday under the new political calendar adopted by the State Legislature and approved by the governor in February.
In previous years, candidates for office began collecting petition signatures in June for filing in July. But the new plan resulted in candidates being on the petition trail since Feb. 26, with an eye toward qualifying for the June 25 primary election.
The new rules result from Democrats taking over the State Senate and passing election reforms previously opposed during GOP control.
