Can­di­dates to be­gin fil­ing des­ig­nat­ing pe­ti­tions Thurs­day

As­pir­ing of­fice hold­ers will be­gin fil­ing des­ig­nat­ing pe­ti­tions to qual­ify for the bal­lot on Thurs­day un­der the new po­lit­i­cal cal­en­dar adopted by the State Leg­is­la­ture and ap­proved by the gover­nor in Feb­ru­ary.

In pre­vi­ous years, can­di­dates for of­fice be­gan col­lect­ing pe­ti­tion sig­na­tures in June for fil­ing in July. But the new plan re­sulted in can­di­dates be­ing on the pe­ti­tion trail since Feb. 26, with an eye to­ward qual­i­fy­ing for the June 25 pri­mary elec­tion.

The new rules re­sult from Democrats tak­ing over the State Se­nate and pass­ing elec­tion re­forms pre­vi­ously op­posed dur­ing GOP con­trol.
