Proposal to ban gun raff les spurs meeting to rally opposition

The Buffalo News - - LOCAL NEWS -

An informational meeting to rally opposition to an Assembly bill that would ban gun raffles by fire companies, conservation clubs and other nonprofits will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Jamison Road Volunteer Fire Company, 1071 Jamison Road, Elma.

Assemblyman David DiPietro, R-East Aurora, and Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard are expected to attend.

A bill from Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon of Brooklyn would ban raffles that award guns as prizes.

Organizers of Saturday’s event say many nonprofit groups rely heavily on proceeds from such raffles to sustain activities ranging from volunteer fire companies to youth fishing and conservation programs. Winners of such raffles must pass background checks before claiming their firearm.
