Town Board to hold hearing on Huntley plant takeover

The Buffalo News - - LOCAL NEWS -

The Tonawanda Town Board will hold a public hearing today on its legal effort to take over the shuttered Huntley Generating Station.

The board could vote afterward to begin eminent domain proceedings against NRG Energy, owner of the Huntley Station, although the board has delayed voting in the past and could wait again until its April 22 meeting.

Huntley closed in 2016 but NRG still provides untreated water to local industrial customers. Tonawanda officials want to ensure that continues and to take control of everything except the site’s fly ash landfill.

The Town Board held a public hearing in December but did not taken further action in order to give NRG more time to sell the property. – Stephen T. Watson
