Walter M. Scales Sr., Army veteran who worked as correction officer

Walter M. Scales Sr., an Army veteran who started acareerasa corrections officer later in life, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital. He was 72.
Mr. Scales was born in Washington, D.C., attended Buffalo Public Schools and graduated from South Park High School in 1966. He attended Buffalo State College for several years before he was drafted into the Army.
He served as a medical corpsman in Korea from 1969 to 1971 and was a member of the Army reserves until he was honorably discharged in May 1988.
Mr. Scales worked at Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo City Court and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In 2001, he became a corrections officer and started at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County, later transferring to the Groveland Correctional Facility in Livingston County. He retired in 2018.
Mr. Scales was known for his love of fashion and enjoyed going to the movies, shopping and watching Westerns on television.
In addition to his wife, Shierry, Mr. Scales is survived by two sons, Walter and Justin; a daughter Genevieve; four brothers, Willie, Hardin, Carson and Nolan; and two sisters, Nora and Carolyn.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle, 883 Sycamore St.
