Wal­ter M. Scales Sr., Army vet­eran who worked as cor­rec­tion of­fi­cer

Wal­ter M. Scales Sr., an Army vet­eran who started aca­reerasa cor­rec­tions of­fi­cer later in life, died Tues­day of car­diac ar­rest at South Buf­falo Mercy Hos­pi­tal. He was 72.

Mr. Scales was born in Wash­ing­ton, D.C., at­tended Buf­falo Pub­lic Schools and grad­u­ated from South Park High School in 1966. He at­tended Buf­falo State Col­lege for sev­eral years be­fore he was drafted into the Army.

He served as a med­i­cal corps­man in Korea from 1969 to 1971 and was a mem­ber of the Army re­serves un­til he was hon­or­ably dis­charged in May 1988.

Mr. Scales worked at Erie County Med­i­cal Cen­ter, Buf­falo City Court and the Vet­er­ans Af­fairs Med­i­cal Cen­ter. In 2001, he be­came a cor­rec­tions of­fi­cer and started at Bed­ford Hills Cor­rec­tional Fa­cil­ity in Westch­ester County, later trans­fer­ring to the Grov­e­land Cor­rec­tional Fa­cil­ity in Livingston County. He re­tired in 2018.

Mr. Scales was known for his love of fash­ion and en­joyed go­ing to the movies, shop­ping and watch­ing West­erns on tele­vi­sion.

In ad­di­tion to his wife, Shierry, Mr. Scales is sur­vived by two sons, Wal­ter and Justin; a daugh­ter Genevieve; four broth­ers, Wil­lie, Hardin, Car­son and Nolan; and two sis­ters, Nora and Carolyn.

Fu­neral ser­vices will be held 11 a.m. to­day at Light­house Gospel Taber­na­cle, 883 Sy­camore St.
