Felony hear­ing held for sus­pect in Elm­wood Vil­lage ar­sons

A felony hear­ing was held Fri­day for a 20-year-old Buf­falo man charged in a se­ries of fires set early Tues­day while he al­legedly bur­glar­ized five garages in the city’s Elm­wood Vil­lage area.

Ac­cord­ing to the Erie County Dis­trict At­tor­ney’s Of­fice, Nathan Wa­syl was charged in city court with five counts of third-de­gree arson, five counts of first-de­gree reck­less en­dan­ger­ment, five counts of sec­ond-de­gree crim­i­nal mis­chief, three counts of third­de­gree bur­glary, and one count each of sec­ond-de­gree bur­glary, pe­tit lar­ceny and tres­pass.

Wa­syl is ac­cused of set­ting garages on fire on Cleve­land, High­land and Elm­wood av­enues and on Pen­hurst Place. The to­tal dam­age was es­ti­mated at more than $800,000. Two fire­fight­ers suf­fered burns.
