See candidates who want to see big money gone
A University of Maryland poll showed that 96 percent of us blame big money donors for the dysfunction of our political system. With the general election approaching, voters should consider which candidates support reforms that will increase trust in our political system.
Bad court decisions like Citizens United have granted corporations and unions constitutional rights that threaten our democracy. The dark money system is a hidden reason behind the ridiculous partisan politics we see in the news.
I’m part of an all-volunteer group called Get Money Out that’s working for a badly needed constitutional amendment to overturn these decisions. The state legislature can pass a resolution to work with other states to either force Congress to propose the amendment or let the states work together to do it themselves. Such a resolution passed in the Maryland House of Delegates last March on a bipartisan vote of 94-42, but it died in the Senate.
Dels. Michael Jackson (D-Calvert, Prince George’s) and Susie Proctor (D-Charles, Prince George’s) co-sponsored the resolution, and Jason Fowler has joined 90 other candidates in a pledge to support this type of resolution if elected. You can go to www. GetMoneyOutMD.org to see who has taken this pledge, and candidates can fill out the pledge form from the website.
