It’s a good time to get insurance
We are approaching the final week for people to sign up for health insurance on the Maryland Exchange. The deadline for enrollment is Dec. 15. Insurance rates have decreased by an average of 13 percent from last year due to a new financing plan passed by our state legislature with the support of Gov. Larry Hogan (R).
The most common cause of bankruptcy in the U.S. remains debt from unexpected medical expenses. This can be prevented for most families by having quality health insurance. With more affordable policies for 2019, this is more realistic for more people. Plans with lower deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs have seen the biggest drops in premiums. These “gold” plans can save thousands of dollars each year for families in Calvert while providing excellent coverage.
Getting an estimate on health and dental premium costs is also quicker and easier than in past years due to an improved Health Exchange website. Go to www.marylandhealthconnection.gov/ and click on “Get an Estimate” to see your options.
The number of uninsured Marylanders has dropped by almost half in the past six years, but about 1 in 15 people still lack any coverage. For many of those individuals and families, health coverage is more affordable than they have imagined. Take a few minutes this week and see if there are good options for you. If you prefer a person to a website, you can call 855-339-3007 with any questions. Have a safe and healthy new year. Dr. Larry Polsky, Prince Frederick The writer is the Calvert County health officer.
