On Sept. 29, approximately 25 volunteers with CityServe, a community service mission initiative of Riva Trace Baptist Church, joined members from the Anne Arundel Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Friends of the Rising Sun Inn to scrap, sand and paint the Rising Sun Inn Carriage House.

The Carriage House, built in the early 1930s, is located behind the historic Rising Sun Inn. With the first volunteers arriving at 8 a.m., teens, adults and seniors worked together all day to restore the Carriage House exterior.

CityServe marked their 10th anniversary with more than 300 volunteers working at 17 different work sites including nonprofits like the Rising Sun Inn, schools and private residences.

Over the past decade, hundreds of CityServe volunteers have given thousands of hours of service to the community.

Chapter Regent and Friends Vice President Susan Giddings said, “As an allvolunteer, nonprofit organization responsible for the restoration and preservation of the Rising Sun Inn historic site, we are totally dependent on donations and fundraising to maintain the inn.

“A project like the Carriage House would have costed several thousand dollars. We projected it would take us approximately 20 months to raise the needed funds. Being selected by CityServe was an absolute gift.”

Giddings explained the restoration of the Carriage House will allow the Friends to expand programming and increase accessibility to programs as the historic inn itself is not wheelchair accessible.
