Dr. Colen C. Heinritz

Colen (Bud) C. Heinritz, Sr. was born on August 8, 1929 to George and Charlotte Heinritz in Baltimore, MD. Colen was a high school alumnus of Baltimore City College. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1951 with his first Bachelor Degree of Science in Biology. After serving in the Army he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1958 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1962 from the University of Maryland. He completed his fellowship at the University Of Pennsylvan­ia School Of Medicine in 1966 specializi­ng in gastroente­rology.

In 1967 he completed his residency in medicine at South Baltimore General Hospital (Harbor Hospital) where he went on to serve as Chairman of the Gastroente­rology Department, Chief of Staff, Director of Continuing Medical Education, Director of Internal Medicine, and Director of Transition­al Residency Program. During his career his knowledge & kindness touched the lives of his patients, medical students and colleagues. He retired from private practice in 2003.

He grew up on and loved the Magothy River and Dividing Creek where he spent his spare time sailing, swimming, water skiing, rowing, fishing and crabbing with his family, grandson and friends. He loved walking accompanie­d by many of his dogs over the years. He was a huge O’s fan and remained a loyal fan even as they faltered. He was a Baltimore Colts fan and then rooted for the Ravens. In addition, he was a wood working enthusiast, voracious reader, Civil War history buff, animal lover and a dedicated husband, father and grandfathe­r. Colen is survived by his wife of 60 years Theresa; son Colen Heinritz, Jr./wife Jenny Heinritz; three daughters Tricia Heinritz/partner Jim Gross, Anne Heinritz and Mary Heinritz; grandson Kyle Heinritz of Georgia; and beloved Labrador Retriever and current walking companion Jeb. He is predecease­d by his parents and a sister, June Shaw.

A celebratio­n of Colen’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in his name to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County (aacspca.org) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).

He will be greatly missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
