Police: Truck jumped curb at shopping center in Baltimore

A man driving a pickup truck jumped the curb in a shopping center in Southwest Baltimore on Friday, a crash that resulted in the death of a woman and a child and the injury of two other children, police said.

The woman died at the scene, and a boy was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. The two other children, both girls, were hospitalized and police said they are excepted to survive.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. in the Mount Clare Junction on West Pratt Street.

The truck had smashed into a brick storefront. Police said it was initially unclear whether the woman and the children were in the vehicle at the time of the crash or were struck by the vehicle.

As police worked at the scene in the aftermath of the crash, shoppers huddled together and some cried before the wreckage.

“To see something like this, it’s very upsetting,” said Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman.

Officers went to the hospital to speak to the surviving children. The driver was uninjured, police said. He remained at the scene and was questioned by officers.

Police were working Friday evening to determine the identities of the victims. At least two were related, police said.

Silbert said they had no reason to suspect the crash was intentional. He said investigators did not know whether the truck had malfunctioned.
