New documentary on MLK gets a preview at annual dinner
Guests at the annual Martin Luther King dinner Jan. 18 will get a preview of a new documentary on the legacy of the slain civil rights leader.
A seven-minute clip from “The Dream Revisited, Civil Rights in Perspective,” a film by Charles and May Love, considers the struggle for civil rights today.
The 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner takes place in Glen Burnie, honoring 10 people for keeping the legacy of the slain civil rights leader alive. This year’s award winners are:
■ Alan Hilliard Legum Civil Rights Award — M. Eve Hurwitz, who helped organize the Women’s March.
■ Alan Hilliard Legum Civil Rights Award — Patricia Cole is an Army officer who retired in 2011 and assumed the role as board chairwoman for the Havre De Grace Colored School Foundation in 2016.
■ Drum Major Award — Midshipman 1st Class Aaron J. Lewis, who is active in community outreach efforts.
■ Drum Major Award — Vivian Gist Spenser, who has served on the board of directors of the Northern Arundel Cultural
Preservation Society since 2005.
Morris H. Blum Humanitarian Award — Annapolis Alderman Marc Rodriguez.
Courageous Leadership Award — Wandra Ashley-Williams, who has served on several boards and commissions and is the executive director of the St. John Baptist Church board.
Peace Maker Award — George Craig “Lassie” Belt, who has worked with Annapolis-area children at the Stanton Community Center, counseling young minds on non-violent conflict resolution, for more than 40 years.
We Share the Dream Award — Najiba Helmi, who became the executive director of Seeds for Success, an Annapolis nonprofit which helps low-income children, in 2017.
Dream Keepers Award — U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, who is serving his eighth term representing the 2nd District which includes a portion of Anne Arundel County.
Dream Keepers Award — U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes, who has represented the 3rd District in Congress since 2007 which includes part of Anne Arundel County.
General admission tickets for the dinner are $65 before Monday and $70 afterward. A VIP reception will begin at 5 p.m. and tickets are $100.
