NAVY SWIMMING:

A strong day of racing at Lejeune Hall concluded with the Navy men's swimming and diving team posting a pair of victories over North Carolina and Penn State and the Navy women's team being edged by the Nittany Lions in the last event of the day.

The Navy men's team (11-2) recorded a 161-134 victory over North Carolina (3-1) and a 163.5-131.5 win over Penn State (1-5). The Navy women's program (9-3) dropped a 156-144 decision to the Nittany Lions (2-4) and a 192-108 meet to the 21st ranked Tar Heels (4-0). This is the first time the Navy men's team has defeated North Carolina since the teams began competing against each other annually starting with the 2012-13 season. Additional­ly, the win by the Mids over the Nittany Lions stopped a two-year losing streak for Navy in the series. ST. MARY’S COLLEGE WOMEN’S

BASKETBALL:

Hallie Persell (Chesapeake) finished with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Seahawks, who fell to York, 61-53. Kelli Jenkins tallied 12 points for St. Mary's, shooting just under 50 percent from three-point range.

NAVY MEN’S GYMNASTICS:

The Navy men's gymnastics team turned in a strong start to its 2019 season with a second-place effort at the West Point Open on Friday night. Trailing the host Army Black Knights for second place down the stretch, the Mids swung the score into their favor with a 68.1-point showing on the floor exercise, their final rotation of the evening. When the dust settled for the team and all-around portion of the two-day West Point Open at Christl Arena, No. 10 Navy had recorded 395.20 points to come in behind the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions (407.50), but ahead of four other programs. In the all-around competitio­n, sophomore Ryan McVay placed fifth overall with 76.80 points.
