Annie Mejia, a fourth-grade student at Belvedere Elementary School, was recently named the winner of a jersey design contest for the Bowie Baysox.

The announcement was made when Baysox staffer Victoria Samuels and Louie the mascot visited the school to deliver tickets students earned as a reward for a reading incentive program. Annie, 9, was surprised when she was announced as the winner.

Tricia K Callender, literacy coach at Belvedere, said the students were required to read four books to receive two tickets to the May 18 Baysox game. This was an incentive the school undertook as part of its Culture of Literacy schoolwide focus, as well as a March reading incentive the Baysox have been a part of for 20 years.

There are five “reading nights” at the Baysox Stadium, which will be attended by students from different schools and their families. Annie’s jersey design, which she described to her father, Alfonso Mejia, as “a wavy, flowy rainbow” will be worn by the players at all five of these games, and a jersey featuring the design will be auctioned with part of the proceeds going to Belvedere Elementary.

Annie will throw out the first pitch of a game, she also receiveda$ 100gift card from Educational Systems Federal CreditUnion.
