Arrests at Meade High

-

I was disappointed to read a front page story that portrayed Meade High School in such a negative light (“Meade students more likely to face arrest,” The Capital, Sept. 8). As a volunteer with Meade High School’s Homeland Security Signature Program for the last four years, I can tell you that it’s a great school with great students.

Many of these students, coming from military families, will follow that tradition and enter our armed forces to serve our country. Many have been excited by the Homeland Security signature theme to pursue careers in law enforcement, cyber security, geographic information systems, anti-terrorism, and other related fields – all important to the safety of our nation.

Where in your article did you talk about all of the students that are taking collegelevel courses at Anne Arundel Community College? Where did you talk about their great color guard that represents Meade High School and our nation at community events?

All of the Anne Arundel Public Schools have challenges, and through cooperative efforts between the school system, law enforcement, and other agencies, they are being addressed. This was not breaking news, deserving front page headlines and perpetuating a negative image of an otherwise fine school.

I encourage parents and business leaders to come to Meade High School, engage with the school, and support the students. That’s what the school needs, not negative headlines.
