Navy senior Ulasewicz earns postseason honor

- Staff report

Navy senior point guard Mary Kate Ulasewicz was named third-team AllPatriot League on Friday. Meanwhile, senior guard Morgan Taylor was named to the Patriot League All-Defensive team.

A four-year member of the program, Ulasewicz developed from a walk-on role player best known for her energy and grit off the bench into team captain and starting point guard as senior. After appearing in a combined 50 games as a reserve her first three seasons, Ulasewicz has played in and started all 29 games as a senior.

Ulasewicz thrived as Navy’s point guard and go-to scorer, posting eight games with five or more assists and 12 games with 10 or more points. She currently ranks ninth in scoring during Patriot League action with a 12.4 points per game average. Additionally, she stands seventh with 1.8 made threepointers per game and 10th with both 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game averages.

Taylor was acknowledged as one of the top defenders in the Patriot League for her role as Navy’s stopper. An athletic defender, who regularly matched up versus the top scorer on the opposing team, Taylor used her physicality and instincts to contain her opponent.

Statistically, she finished fourth in the Patriot League with a 1.6 steals per contest average (44 over 27 contests). Taylor recorded at least one steal in 23 of the 27 games she played, swiping five steals against Maine and four versus Boston University.

No. 10 Navy will travel to Washington, D.C. to meet seventh-seeded American in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday (2 p.m.) at Bender Arena.

Navy Men’s Basketball: Sophomore forward Walter Whyte registered a doubledouble with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead third-seeded Boston University to a 69-93 victory over No. 6 Navy in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament on Thursday at Case Gym.

Junior guard Javante McCoy finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with four assists for Boston, which will now host No. 7 Bucknell in the semifinals on Sunday. Sophomore guard Jonas Harper chipped in 11 points for the Terriers (19-13).

Junior guard Cam Davis scored 13 points to lead Navy (14-16), which finished with a losing record. Senior center Evan Wieck added 12 points and five rebounds despite spending considerable time on the bench due to foul trouble.

Sophomore guard John Carter Jr. and freshman guard Tyler Nelson both scored 10 points, while sophomore guard Greg Summers pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Midshipmen, who could not hold a 31-27 halftime lead.

Navy Baseball: Freshman Alex Smith became the first baseball player in Patriot League history to sweep the weekly Player and Rookie of the Week honors since the conference was founded in 2002.

In Navy’s three-game sweep of Massachusetts this past weekend, Smith went 6-for-10 at the plate with a 1.000 slugging percentage while reaching base at a .615 clip. Of his six hits last weekend, three went for extra bases and Smith also paced the Midshipmen with six RBIs and scored four runs.

Smith highlighted the week by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs in Navy’s final game of the weekend where it grabbed a 17-5 win over UMass.
