County adds 84 virus cases, positive test results drop to 15%
Anne Arundel County added 84 coronavirus cases and four deaths Friday, while Maryland added 1,279 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours and 41 deaths, state health department data shows.
The county now has 3,643 confirmed cases, with 158 deaths. Another nine people may have died from the disease, but a lab test was never performed and are listed as probable deaths.
Statewide, 328,516 tests have been administered and 233,530 were negative, bringing the state’s positivity rate to 12%. Positivity and hospitalization rates are two important metrics guiding Gov. Larry Hogan’s decision to slowly reopen the state. There are currently 1,296 COVID-19 patients in acute or intensive care in Maryland hospitals and 3,571 patients have been released from isolation.
Hogan said in a tweet Friday the state tested 11,719 people in the last 24 hours.
The state’s positive test result rate peaked on April 17 when it reached 26.91%, Hogan said. As more asymptomatic and people with mild symptoms are tested due to an increase in test kits, the positivity rate has dropped by more than 55%, down to 12% statewide.
In Anne Arundel County, the positive test results totaled about 15% on Thursday, down from 18% earlier this week.
The county has now met seven of the 12 benchmarks set for reopening the economy, with progress on others. The goals include testing 2% of the county population each week, but the county is only at .6 percent as of Thursday. The goal is to have a 10% positive rate for three days.
The county also is still working on a 14-day supply of protective equipment and two of the three factors in the health equity measurement, which tracks how well the county is doing in getting additional protections to those at greatest risk.
A low rate of positivity in testing data can be seen as a sign that a state has sufficient testing capacity for the size of their outbreak and is testing enough of its population to make informed decisions about reopening, according to John Hopkins University and Medicine.
Maryland has not yet met the positivity rate recommended by the World Health Organization.
The World Health Organization recommends a positivity rate of 5% or below. President Donald Trump announced Friday the United States would be ending its relationship with the organization.
Anne Arundel confirmed cases by ZIP code
Here is an alphabetical breakdown of the number of cases in each ZIP code in Anne Arundel County (as of Wednesday). This data uses the county’s numbers. State numbers are in parentheses.
ZIP codes that overlap more than one county are in italics. The state numbers also account for cases at congregate living facilities in those ZIP codes, which the county numbers do not include.
The county has said that they remove cases from this data as they determine they are from congregate housing, such as nursing homes or retirement communities, which may also account for discrepancies.
