TheCapital
So, a Gotham- based conglomeratewants to take our local newspaper private. We do not own Tribune stock, so we cannot be swayed by their offer of over and above the closing stock price. Howgenerous of them.
We look to you for local news and events. The Capital is our neighborhood newspaper. We are proud to hold in our hands the descendant of centuries of FirstAmendment rights passed down, then printed, delivered from publishers, editors and hard- working reporters and writers to our front door.
What is your take on this buyout? Being privately owned by absentee landlords, will this affect the content, the news- gathering capacity, the tone of The Capital? Any political pressure?
Oh, and in that article, about a quarter of the way in, there is this gotcha, “A New York- based hedge fund with a reputation for sweeping layoffs at its newspaper properties, Alden owns about 200 publications throughanoperatingcompanyknown asMediaNews Group.”
As loyal readers, we don’t like that our news source will be just another “property” among some 200 others. Howabout you? JOHNW. BEHLE and VERAO. HERATH
