Pause hit on weekend games due to positive test
Navy women’s basketball on Tuesday postponed this weekend’s games against Loyola Maryland as the team remains in quarantine protocol after a positive COVID- 19 test was revealed Friday.
It’s the second straight weekend the M ids postponed games, as the positive test late lastweek forced the postponement of two games against Bucknell.
“We are disappointed to have to postpone our games thisweekend against Loyola,” coach Tim Taylor wrote in a statement. “However, safeguarding the health and safety of our midshipmen, faculty, staff and coaches, and our extended Naval Academy family and the local community remains the top priority during this pandemic.”
The contests between the Mids and Greyhounds will be rescheduled after discussions with the schools and Patriot League office. Navy’s games against Bucknell have not yet been rescheduled.
A news release from Navy athletics last week described the positive test as “Tier 1,” which is defined as the highest exposure and “consists of individuals for whom physical distancing and face coverings are not possible or effective during athletic training or competition.”
Those relevant individuals include student- athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.
While the women’s team had no known coronavirus issues before Friday, Navy men’s basketball had two nonconference games canceled and paused all activities for about two weeks in December due to positive tests within its program. Positive tests among the Loyola Maryland men’s team forced the postponement of its games against Navy on Jan. 9 and10.
