No British Open at Trump course
DonaldTrump’sownershipofTurnberry will prevent the Scottish course fromstaging the British Open for “the foreseeable future,” the chief executiveof theR& Asaid Monday.
Turnberry hasn’t hosted the tournament since itwas bought byTrump in 2014.
“We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future,” R& A chief executiveMartin Slumbers said.
Slumbers’ comments came a day after the PGA of America voted to take the PGA Championship event away from Trump’s NewJersey golf course next year.
The decisions came in the wake of last week’s Trump- fueled riot at the Capitol as Congresswas certifying the election victory of President- elect Joe Biden.
Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died.
“We will not return ( to Turnberry),” Slumbers said, “until we are convinced that the focus will beonthe championship, the players and the course itself andwe do notbelieve that is achievable inthe current circumstances.”
The last British Open at Turnberry was in 2009.
Harris English won the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions on Sunday in Kapalua, Hawaii. English made a 6- foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Joaquin Niemann. It was English’s third career victory and first in over seven years. TheTournamentofChampionsis for winnersonly fromthepreviousyear, but the fieldwas expanded to include anyonewho reached the Tour Championship because of theCOVID- 19 pandemic that shutdown thePGATour for three months.
Colleges: As expected, the NCAA on Monday delayed votes on legislation that would permit college athletes to cash in on their popularity for the first time and to transfer to another school without having to sit out one year.
Wizards PG Russell Westbrook is expected to sit out a week and miss five games with an injured left leg. The team said the 2016- 17 leagueMVPandnine- time All- NBAselectionwouldbere- evaluated at the end of theweek.
