The Capital

Fantasy world

- Elvia Thompson, Annapolis

I find it disturbing to see how the fantasy world of the supporters of the previous federal administration continues. Just like the anti-science, anti-intellect, anti-human decency leader of the past four years, letter writer Dennis McGee turns truth on its head and uses words to describe progressive thinking that, instead, aptly describe the very things he seems to stand for (The Capital, March 25.

Those words are in quotes below. People who favor the world order of the past where there are winners (those with privilege) and losers (those without) are the ones with “destructive ambitions.” The “anti-American, anti-Constitution” policies the writer ascribes to progressive thinking aptly describe exactly what former President Donald Trump’s administration foisted upon this country.

As to HR1, it is exactly what we need right now to counter four years of “smashand-grab crime” designed to “create as much confusion and damage as possible” and enrich those in power.

The last four years under the thumb of the perpetrator of the Big Lie was “planned destruction of American’s culture, values, and economic power.” How ironic that the letter writer applies those words to progressive thinking.

Our democracy is under attack from people who think violently storming the Capitol is a patriotic act, from elected officials in many states who are working to make voting difficult (Georgia, most recently), from the former president who continues to spew vitriol, and from people who think like McGee.

I do agree with him on one point – the future is bright, but only because intelligent, thoughtful people who believe in truth and human decency are now in charge. With truth and goodwill, we all need to counter those who would take us back down the dark path of the last four years.
