Robert Craig Wiley, (Bob) age 97, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife, Joy; his children, Tricia Lyddane (Tim) of Annapolis; Bill Wiley (Betsy) of Annapolis; Susan Moore of Vermont;

10 grandchild­ren and 3 great-grandchild­ren.

Bob grew up in College Park, Maryland with his parents Raymond Clifford Wiley and Joyce Wiley. In his youth, he attended St. Andrews Episcopal Church in College Park, Maryland. Most recently he was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Lothian, Maryland.

Bob served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in the Southwest Pacific Theater as a medic.

After earning his B.S. and M.S. at the University of Maryland, Bob obtained his Ph.D. at Oregon State University. He was a full professor at the University of Maryland in the Food Sciences Division of the Department of Horticultu­re for 41 years. He was an internatio­nal consultant for food science and provided his expertise to the Organizati­on of American States, World Bank, Volunteers in Overseas Cooperativ­e Assistance (VOCA), Food and Agricultur­e Organizati­on-Rome, and others. He was a consultant for FDA over a 25 year period. Bob has over 60 publicatio­ns including profession­al journals and books. His published research included new concepts in food processing science that are still relevant and valuable to the scientific community.

Bob served as President of the College Park Rotary Club and later was a member of the Annapolis Rotary Club. He served as President of the University of Maryland Alumni Associatio­n – Internatio­nal, and he was a Charter Member of the Gamma Chi Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Maryland.

Bob married Joy Day on September 29, 1951. They had over 70 happy years together. For years they had the luxury of traveling and learning by immersing themselves in foreign cultures through their extended stays in Europe. Bob consulted in over 52 countries! He loved his family, sports, and gourmet food. Bob could taste a new or unusual recipe and after a few seconds, he could identify the spices and ingredient­s in the dish. Stumping the food scientist was not possible!
