Mattingly set to join Jays as bench coach
Don Mattingly, who left his job as Marlins manager at the end of last season, is joining the Blue Jays’ staff as bench coach to manager John Schneider, the team announced Wednesday.
Mattingly, 61, said he’d been contacted by multiple clubs with offers for 2023.
The former Yankees slugger and six-time All-Star joins the Blue Jays after seven seasons with the Marlins. Mattingly won NL manager of the year honors in 2020.
Before the Marlins, Mattingly won three division titles in five seasons as manager of the Dodgers. He also worked as hitting coach and bench coach for the Yankees, and as hitting coach of the Dodgers before his managerial stint with the team.
College football: Mickey Joseph, who served as interim head coach for Nebraska for nine games this season, was arrested on suspicion of strangulation and third degree domestic assault. The Lincoln Police Department said officers were dispatched to a residence on a domestic disturbance call. After an investigation, officers arrested Joseph, 54, a former Cornhuskers QB, at a separate location. Joseph was placed on administrative leave by Nebraska AD Trev Alberts on Wednesday. Last week, Nebraska hired former Panthers and Baylor coach Matt Rhule as its next head coach . ... Florida backup QB Jalen Kitna, the 19-year-old son of former NFL QB Jon Kitna, was arrested on two counts of distribution of child exploitation material and three counts of possession of child pornography. He has been suspended indefinitely from the football program.
NFL: Rams DT Aaron Donald will not play Sunday vs. the Seahawks because of a high ankle sprain. It will be the first time the three-time defensive player of the year will miss a game due to injury in his nine-year career . ... Falcons TE Kyle Pitts will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Pitts was a Pro Bowler as a rookie last season.
