Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse will add three new members to Hall of Fame
The Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse will add three new members to its Hall of Fame this month.
Syd Abernethy, Jason Zachary Wade and Jacque Weitzel Stahl will be formally enshrined on Jan. 26 at the Elks Lodge in Annapolis as the seventh induction class into the Chesapeake Chapter.
Abernethy was a high-scoring attackman at Annapolis High and the Naval Academy, Wade was a do-it-all midfielder at Severn School and North Carolina and Weitzel was a prolific attacker at Garrison Forest and Dartmouth.
Abernethy began playing varsity lacrosse at Key School while only in the seventh grade and was a three-year varsity letterman. He transferred to Annapolis High as a sophomore and played two more varsity seasons. He was a two-time, firstteam All-County selection by The Capital, a first-team All-Metro pick by The Baltimore Sun and earned All-American honors from US Lacrosse.
As a senior in high school in 1977, Abernethy scored eight goals as Annapolis handed private school powerhouse Wroxeter Prep its lone loss. He was recruited to the Naval Academy by coach Dick Szlasa and was a four-year varsity letterman from 1978 through 1981.
Abernethy still ranks 12th on Navy’s all-time list with 141 career points on 87 goals and 54 assists. He was a member of four NCAA Tournament teams, appearing in three semifinals.
Abernethy enjoyed a huge senior season, amassing 56 points on 39 goals and 17 assists. That goal total still stands seventh on Navy’s single-season chart. He was named a first-team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association after earning honorable mention as a junior.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound attackman was tough to stop going to the goal, using a combination of power and quickness to dodge defenders with a slick inside roll move. He totaled eight points on six goals and two assists against Rutgers and Princeton in 1981.
Wade was a sophomore member of the 1990 Severn School squad that reached the MSA A Conference championship game. The left-handed attackman was a two-time, firstteam All-County selection by The Capital and earned first-team All-Metro honors from The Sun as a senior in 1992.
Wade was inducted into the Severn School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
Wade earned a scholarship to the University of North Carolina, following in the footsteps of his older brother Ryan. He switched from attack to midfield and became a four-year varsity letterman. He was a three-year member of the first midfield after earning the Jay Gallagher Memorial Award as Carolina’s most outstanding freshman in 1993.
Wade was named first team USILA All-American in 1996 after earning honorable mention as a sophomore and junior.
Wade had a huge senior season, totaling 55 points on the strength of 45 goals, which still ranks seventh on Carolina’s single-season list. He was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and received the Turnbull Trophy as Most Valuable Player for the Tar Heels.
Wade joined his older brother as winner of the prestigious McLaughlin Award as National Midfielder of the Year in 1996. He was selected for the USILA North-South Senior All-Star game that year.
Weitzel was a four-year varsity letter winner and twice earned first team All-Metro honors from The Sun. She was a two-time US Lacrosse High School All-American and was a member of the United States Under-19 national team.
She became a scoring machine at Dartmouth and still holds the program’s career record with 199 goals from 1997 to 2000. She also still holds Big Green single-season records for both goals (67) and points (79).
Weitzel was a three-time, first team All-Ivy League pick. She was named Ivy League Player of the Year as a senior and was a three-time, first team All-American choice by the Intercollegiate
Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
The gifted attacker led Dartmouth in scoring for three straight seasons — totaling 72 points on 62 goals and 10 assists in 1998, 70 points on 48 goals and 22 assists in 1999 and 79 points on 67 and 12 in 2000.
