Heat-Pelicans fight leads to 5 suspensions
The Heat’s Jimmy Butler and Pelicans’ Naji Marshall were suspended one game apiece for instigating an on-court altercation, the NBA announced Sunday.
The incident happened during the Heat-Pelicans game Friday night.
The Heat’s Thomas Bryant and Pelicans’ Jose Alvarado were both handed three-game bans for fighting and leaving the bench area. The Heat’s Nikola Jovic also got a one-game suspension for leaving the bench area and entering the altercation, the league said.
Butler will lose nearly $260,000 in salary because of his suspension. The rest of the suspensions will cost the four other players about $115,000, combined.
The incident started when the Heat’s Kevin Love fouled Zion Williamson. Butler and Marshall “engaged in a physical altercation” after the foul, the league said, and Alvarado and Bryant then fought.
Hawks All-Star PG Trae Young will be out at least four weeks with a torn ligament in his left pinkie finger. Young will have surgery Tuesday.
Baseball: The Cubs and OF Cody Bellinger agreed to a three-year, $80 million contract. Bellinger, 28, hit a career-best .307 with 26 HRs, 97 RBIs and 20 steals in 130 games for Cubs last season.
College basketball: Daniss Jenkins scored a season-high 27 points and St. John’s shredded No. 15 Creighton 80-66 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Creighton coming off an eye-opening blowout of top-ranked UConn at home Tuesday.
Golf: Patty Tavatanakit, a 24-year-old Bangkok native, won the LPGA Thailand by one stroke.
NHL: Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists and became the first player in the league to reach 100 points this season in leading the Lightning to a 4-1 victory over the host Devils. Kucherov reached 100 points in a team-record 59 games.
