Man faces second-degree assault charges after standoff

- By Luke Parker

After a lengthy standoff with police, an armed Edgewater man was arrested outside his home Monday night and charged with second-degree assault, court records show.

Robert Curtis Williams, 35, also faces reckless endangerment and firearm-related charges. He is being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center.

Officers responded to the 1600 block of Midland Road shortly before 3:30 p.m., Monday, where they met with a household member who told them Williams had physically assaulted another person in the house before attacking them as well, at one point putting them in a headlock and twisting their arm behind their back.

By the time police arrived, Williams had barricaded himself inside a bathroom, armed with a handgun and a long gun. He was wearing bulletproof body armor as well, according to charging documents.

Drone footage captured by a neighbor and shared with The Capital showed several police cars and trucks on the scene at Midland Road and nearby streets. In a statement, a police department spokesperson said “numerous resources” responded to Williams’ home, declining to clarify what units they were.

Once police ensured Williams was the only person inside the house, officers “took steps to take him into custody safely,” Limansky said.

Drone footage shows armored police breaking down a door with a battery ram before stepping away from the house. Williams is soon seen leaving the residence. Police used a flash grenade or stun device at some point before taking Williams into custody.

Williams was barred from owning a firearm at the time of his arrest because of a prior conviction.

A court date following Tuesday’s bail review has not yet been set and a defense attorney has not yet been retained in the case, court records show.
