Two inmates charged with attempted murder
Two inmates at the Jessup Correctional Institution were charged with attempted murder Wednesday after attacking another prisoner with a 5-inch blade, according to corrections officers.
Marvin Dyson, 23, and Niko Ware, 18, face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following the attack, court records show.
Shortly before 6 p.m., a corrections officer witnessed a fight between three inmates on the top step of a housing unit, according to charging documents. Two inmates, identified as Dyson and Ware, were in an altercation with a third — Ware using his fists and Dyson a “homemade” knife, a detective wrote.
As the fight escalated, spilling into another area of the unit, officers deployed mace to stop the prisoners. The knife was dropped and taken by officials. All three men were put into handcuffs.
The prisoner attacked was taken to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center for his injuries. Officials said he had cuts on one of his hands and arms, as well as puncture wounds to his back. either Dyson nor Ware were injured in the fight, according to charging documents.
The motive for the attack and the relationship between the prisoners was not explained in charging documents. The detective noted that the man attacked “refused to cooperate” with the investigation.
According to court records, Dyson is from La Plata and was serving a nine-year sentence for a shooting in Charles County. In May 2021, when he was 21, Dyson was arrested after a witness identified him as being one of several people involved first in a fight that escalated into a shooting. He pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in 2022.
Ware, of Washington, has been incarcerated since 2022 following several robbery and carjacking arrests in Prince George’s County. His most recent convictions both were for charges in February 2023.
In Wednesday’s attack, both inmates have been charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-and second-degree assault, two counts of conspiracy and weapons charges.
