State AG Brown endorses Trone in Senate race against Alsobrooks

- By Jeff Barker

State Attorney General Anthony Brown has endorsed U.S. Senate candidate and current U.S. Rep. David Trone and appears in a new campaign ad for the fellow Democrat.

“I’ve been in the trenches with him sticking up for fairness and standing up for everyday people,” says Brown, the former lieutenant governor, in the television ad. The Trone campaign said the ad began broadcasting statewide on Wednesday.

Brown, who was elected in 2022, is Maryland’s first Black attorney general. Prior to that, he was a U.S. House member representing Maryland’s 4th Congressional

District beginning in 2017. He served in the House with Trone, who was first elected in 2018.

The 4th Congressional District includes parts of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties. Trone’s principal opponent in the May 14 Senate primary is Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks has the endorsements of five of the six Democrats — other than Trone himself — in Maryland’s U.S. House delegation: Reps. Kweisi Mfume, John Sarbanes, Steny Hoyer, Glenn Ivey and Jamie Raskin.

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Baltimore County has endorsed Trone, a thirdterm congressman representing Frederick County and Western Maryland.

Brown also endorsed Trone in the 2018 U.S. House primary in which Trone won in a wide Democratic field in the 6th Congressional District that included Aruna Miller, the current lieutenant governor.

Trone, the wealthy co-founder of Total Wine & More, announced his Senate candidacy in May 2023.

Trone and Alsobrooks are the leading candidates, in terms of endorsements and money, for the Senate seat, which is being vacated by the retirement of Ben Cardin after this year.

The primary is May 14.
