Catoosa Citizens for Literacy celebrates literacy week
In celebration of literacy week in the state of Georgia, Catoosa Citizens for Literacy sponsored a Papa John’s pizza party for the GED students in attendance in the day and evening classes at the Learning Center of Catoosa County. Awards for attendance and level completions were presented by the GED instructors.
The mission of Catoosa Citizens for Literacy is to help all families of the community achieve life-long learning through literacy enabling them to reach individual goals, while providing businesses with a better-educated, productive workforce.
According to the literacy taskforce, there are three barriers preventing citizens from getting their GED. Childcare, transportation and the cost of GED testing. Catoosa Citizens for Literacy has removed all three barriers.
By raising funds to purchase a 20passenger bus, free transportation is available to students residing in Catoosa County. A childcare center with three childcare providers is available to the children of students attending classes. Lastly, Catoosa Citizens for Literacy pays the $160 GED testing fee for all Catoosa County residents who attend classes until the instructor feels they are prepared to pass the GED. Several college scholarships are also presented each year to students who have passed the GED exam.
Along with eliminating the barriers, the center offers free reading classes as well as free basic computer classes. With the help of local businesses and individuals, the center continues its efforts to break the cycle of illiteracy. For more information or to volunteer, call 706-965-8275.
