Warriors earn second region win
The Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe football team ended a two-game losing streak on Friday to earn its first region victory.
The Warriors of LFO shutout the Warriors of Gordon Central, 23-0, to earn the right to raise the “Spirit Flag.”
LFO head coach Todd Windham said it was a good night for his youngsters.
Although Windham said it felt good to celebrate a win, he said it won’t get any easier with Cartersville slated for Friday.
“It was an important region victory,” he said. “You set your sites and goals in the preseason, and all of that is determined by the region.”
“I think we’re improving. We want to be playing better in week 10 than we are in week 5. We’re trying to get these younger guys more playing time. It’s on the job training because there’s no substitute for Friday night reps. For those guys to go out and get those reps, it’s a win-win for us.”
Windham said he hoped his team would also gain “more confidence” as the season goes on.
“The good thing is we ended a three-week road trip this week,” he said. “We have Cartersville Friday, which is another daunting challenge. This win gives us some enthusiasm going into that game. Hopefully we can give them a fight.”
LFO scored in each quarter, including once on defense to shutout Gordon Central.
Warrior quarterback Sky Rogers scored his first of two touchdowns for the night on a run from the 2 with 5:52 to play in the opening quarter. The kick was no good.
Jacob Williams booted a 21-yard field goal as time expired to give LFO a 9-0 lead at the half.
Rogers highlighted the third quarter with a 10-yard run at the 7:22 mark. Williams kicked the PAT.
The final score came when Tanner Bennett recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 9:09 in the game. Williams kicked the PAT.
Rogers finished the game 9-of-18 with 75 yards passing. He also had 52 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Jacob Gilbert led the Red-and-White with 66-yards rushing on 17 attempts.
