Carter named to lead Heritage softball proram

-

Heritage principal Ronnie Bradford said the Generals didn’t have to look far to find a new softball coach, less than one week after former head coach Steve Chattin resigned his post.

Chattin was the only softball coach Heritage ever had. He built the program and produced 198 wins and four region championships in seven years, Bradford said finding a coach capable of carrying on the school’s winning tradition started by Chattin was important. He said it was also impeccable to find someone that cared about the young ladies and their goals on the diamond, which made Jason Carter the right choice.

“Jason joined the softball staff a few years ago,” Bradford said. “He’s been an assistant to coach Chattin, knows the girls and knows the program. He’s a great coach, I’ve worked with him for a long time and I trust him totally.”

Bradford said Carter, a former college baseball player, didn’t start coaching softball to become a head coach. He said Carter began “to help Chattin, because someone was needed to help and he knew the girls are wonderful to work with.”

Bradford said when he asked Carter to be an interim and his main concern was the young ladies of the program.

“I like that he did this because he believes in the girls,” Bradford said.

Carter said he plans to continue to do great things with the Lady Generals.

“I love Steve Chattin,” Carter said. “I’m a Steve Chattin fan. I’ve coached for him for two years and I love what he’s done. Taking a program like this is bittersweet and I’m very excited. It’s also a successful program because he’s done a phenomenal job.”

Carter, who will be joined by current softball assistant Alan Broom and assistant baseball coach Tanner Moore, said he knew following in Chattin’s footsteps would be hard, but planned to do his best to continue on the winning tradition.

“We’re just going to do the best to keep the train moving at the same rate of speed,” he said.

Carter said his main concern was the Lady Generals and helping them succeed.

“In this transition, my goal has been to allow the girls in this program to be able to do what they’re passionate about as seamlessly as possible,” he said. “We know it’s not going to be perfect, but we want them to be able to
